More Sights from Southern Gran Canaria
When we changed our plans to move to the southern part of Gran Canaria one day early, it meant that we were able to go to the somewhat famous market held every Friday in Puerto de Mogan. So, for our first day here we headed off to see what all the fuss is about it. We took a taxi there from our hotel - good thing as all the parking lots were chockablock full! Then we strolled the approximately 2 km long market which ends near the harbour. The goods on sale were mostly purses, clothing, jewellery and souvenirs. I had expected food stalls selling cheeses, meats, breads, etc. but, other than a couple of stalls selling local honey and sauces, there weren't any. Still it was in interesting experience and it was certainly crowded.
Afterwards, we went to a restaurant on the harbour for a snack and a glass of (mediocre) sangria. The latter will be my last on this trip! The harbour itself is quite pretty and had a well-populated beach.
We then wandered over to a neighbourhood called Little Venice. It was truly charming, much quieter and, in hindsight, where we wished we'd stopped for a refreshment. The narrow streets were really pretty. From the harbour, we boarded a shuttle ferry to go back to Puerto Rico.
Saturday, we opted for a complete change of scenery. I had read about the Mirador del Balcon, a viewpoint perched at the top of a series of towering sea cliffs nicknamed "Dragon's Tail" and I really wanted to see it. It was just over an hour's drive from where we were staying. In reality, it wasn't that far but the time to get there was because most of the road there has a 40 km - for good reason, as it is very winding with so many switchbacks and hairpin turns that I lost count! Later we said we weren't sure which was most spectacular - the drive there or the destination. Here are just a few photos of the journey there and the cliffs you can see from the Mirador del Balcon.
